Part Two of Equipment Degreasers Containing Trichloroethylene Is At The Center Of The US Military's Water Contamination Crisis

Water Contamination Lawsuit News

The water contamination crisis is not limited to Camp Lejeune and could affect every military base in the United States

Sunday, November 20, 2022 - (continued) The US Navy had rejected about 5000 Camp Lejeune water claims on technical grounds. One reason for the rejections was that Federal Government was immune to lawsuits. Another was that the North Carolina Statute of Repose expired in 1963, laughably. Finally, thousands of claims were rejected due to the type of cancer one suffered from was not on the VA's then-narrow list of illnesses thought to be "service-related." The Camp Lejeune Justice Act correctly expands the cancer list.

The military degreasing chemical at the core of the military's water contamination crisis is trichloroethylene (TCE), a definitive cause of cancer according to US Health agencies. The State of California recently passed Assembly Bill 1803 which required the Army to test the water supply at Fort Ord for chemical contamination. According to the report of the results, three water wells on the base tested positive for TCE at levels far exceeding the EPA-mandated limits. SOFREP article stresses that there is no room for speculation about TCE's toxicity or lack thereof and that its deadly cause and effect are not in question. " They say that "prolonged or repeated exposure to trichloroethylene causes kidney cancer." Not "may cause" or "could potentially cause "...they say it causes kidney cancer. That's an extremely direct language for the government and scientists in general," SOFREP wrote. According to SOFREP, the National Cancer Institute and the National Institute of Health have addressed trichloroethylene (TCE) and discovered it has strong molecular bonds that prevent it from breaking down organically and thus easily passes through the soil intact, into the underlying water table. "Because this chemical was used extensively by the US military to degrease equipment, contaminated soil and groundwater can be found near many current and former military bases," according to US health experts. TCE is not the only volatile organic compound found at Camp Lejeune and should be presumed to contaminate the water at all US military bases with similar modus operandi. The chemicals found at Camp Lejeune according to the VA include Trichloroethylene (TCE), Perchloroethylene (PCE), Benzene, Vinyl chloride, and notably other compounds.

These "other compounds" presumably refer to carcinogenic PFAS forever chemicals found in Aqueous Film Forming Foam (AFFF), a fire-fighting tool that has been used for decades to train with and sometimes extinguish petroleum and jet-fuel fires. North Carolina State Attorney General Joel Stein recently filed two PFAS water lawsuits against the manufacturers of firefighting foam for egregiously failing to warn the government of the dangers of PFAS forever chemicals found in the drinking water at Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune and Marine Corps Air Station New River, and also at Piedmont-Triad International Airport. Stein is quoted on his official government web page as saying, "In our filing with the court, we allege that these companies that made firefighting foam knew well how dangerous it was to our first responders and our natural resources," said Attorney General Josh Stein. "But they continued to sell this product to line their pockets at the expense of our health and our drinking water."
