Tuesday, September 20, 2022 - The US Military is focused on fighting a formidable domestic enemy that could claim more human lives than any of the wars they have engaged in. Water contamination on military bases not only threatens the lives of service members, civilian employees, and contractors working on the base, but also the lives of those living, working, and playing in the communities immediately surrounding the base who rely on the local water treatment plant for their drinking water. Responsible military leaders are demanding that the base's drinking water be tested for PFAS forever chemicals per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances, and other volatile organic compounds including benzene and methyl chlorine. In a nutshell, PFAS forever chemicals are dangerous because they are made of molecular bonds that are difficult to separate and bioaccumulate in the cells instead of being broken down and eliminated. Aqueous film-forming foam, or AFFF is another name for firefighting foam. PFAS water attorneys that are familiar with the carcinogenic nature of firefighting foam are available for consultation to determine if a cancer victim may file a law suit seeking lump-sum monetary awards from 3M, the manufacturer of firefighting foam. Billions of dollars of lawsuits are expected in the months and years to come against private companies also against the federal government.
Almost every water test performed by the military has shown that the water consumed by servicemembers is contaminated with chemicals and possibly causes cancer. Armed with this knowledge, military veterans that have developed cancer and the survivors of those who have died from the disease are filing water contamination lawsuits against the federal government for polluting the water. Water pollution/contamination has occurred due to routing military exercises, improperly disposing of toxic waste in unlined landfills, leaky underground fuel tanks, and because of using firefighting foam made by 3M and other manufacturers. For the first time, military leaders are admitting more than 400 instances of water contamination on many of the bases located throughout the US and are providing millions of gallons of pure bottled water to servicemembers free of charge. Kuow.org reports, "New test results show that the drinking water wells near the Army's Yakima Training Center are contaminated with chemicals that increase the risks of certain kinds of cancer and other health conditions. The military is now providing bottled water for drinking and cooking to those residences." This base specifically identified PFAS forever chemicals from firefighting foam as being the primary contaminant of the local water supply. "The contamination stems from a firefighting foam that the military used at the training center for decades, up until 2016. The foam contained dangerous chemicals that increase the risks of certain kinds of cancer, thyroid disease, and other health conditions. The chemicals can also harm people's immune systems," KUOW reports. Local municipalities that supply water to tens of millions of residents also have a firefighting foam water contamination problem as firefighting stations train with the chemical regularly. ">
