The EPA Has Lowered Its Tolerance For Acceptable Levels Of PFAS Forever Chemicals In Municipal Drinking Water To Nearly Zero

Water Contamination Lawsuit News

Cleaning up America's drinking water contamination problem is a large part of transitioning to a greener society

Monday, June 27, 2022 - The other day, the Environmental Protection Agency, perhaps in anticipation of the Honoring Our Pact Act, lowered the level of PFAS contaminates that is acceptable in drinking water to nearly zero. The EPA levels are orders of magnitude lower than the levels that most states have established and will force the states to test municipal drinking water treatment facilities to be in EPA compliance. According to NatLawReview.com, "In its June 15 release, EPA established the following interim updated lifetime drinking water health advisories: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA): 0.004 ppt, and Perfluorooctane sulfonic acid (PFOS): 0.02 ppt. These levels are orders of magnitude below the 70 ppt levels previously established by EPA for PFOA and PFOS in 2016 and suggest EPA may be moving towards concluding that there is no safe level of these substances in drinking water." The EPA's recognition of the toxicity of PFAS forever chemicals will provide a spark of hope to those who have developed PFAS cancer and are filing lawsuits seeking to hold the manufacturers of forever chemicals and the federal or state government accountable for their decades of negligence. At the heart of the PFAS cancer lawsuits will be that the act of drinking ordinary local tap water caused them to develop cancer and other terminal illnesses including Parkinson's disease.

The bill is part of the Honoring Our Pact Act that president Biden spoke of in glowing terms during his State of The Union Address to lawmakers and the nation earlier this year. The bill has passed both the House of Representatives and The Senate and awaits the President's signature. As ground-breaking as the bill is there are other important aspects of bringing attention to America's drinking water problems. Improperly disposing of toxic firefighting foam, dry cleaning solutions, agricultural pesticides, herbicide runoff, and other industrial contaminates has polluted almost every local water supply with PFAS forever chemicals. PFAS forever chemicals are of concern to human health because they bio-accumulate in the cells of the body's vital organs over time and are proven to cause cancer. PFAS forever chemical show not only in the local tap water, but also in the fruit, vegetables, fish, dairy products, and the meat we eat. Toxic chemicals pollute source drinking and farm irrigation water. PFAS forever chemical can also be found in non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, stain-resistant carpeting and draperies, and also in fast-food packaging.

The Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA) will allow marine corp veterans, Camp Lejeune civil employees, and the families of both groups of people the right to file a lawsuit against the Department of Justice and the federal government seeking lump-sum monetary damages. If you have lived on or near the Camp Lejeune Marine Base for at least 30-days between 1953 and 1980, and have had a diagnosis of cancer or neurological disease, you should consult a Camp Lejeune cancer attorney to see if you qualify to file a claim.
