Tuesday, May 17, 2022 - The US Government may have killed more US Marines, spouses, and children than any declared foreign enemy could have with all the bullets and bombs they possess. Millions of US Marines stationed at Camp Lejeune, and their families have had exposure to PFAS drinking water through drinking tap water contaminated with PFAS forever chemicals. One Marine, veteran stationed at Camp Lejeune whose 9-year-old daughter recently died from leukemia, wrote in the Carolina Journal, "From 1953 to 1987, residents and staff at Camp Lejeune were poisoned by contaminated water containing volatile organic compounds (VOCs) at levels up to 3,400 times the established safety standards." The youngster had no medical history of cancer on either side of the family. Until now, Marine veterans have had no legal recourse against the Department of Defense for their negligence and covering up what they knew about toxic drinking water causing Marine families to get cancer. The Camp Lejeune Justice Act is an effort to overturn the statute of limitations that Marines must adhere to if they wish to sue the government. The Act, which rumors have it, could be approved this week by the Senate, will allow servicemember families the right to hire a Camp Lejeune Water Contamination lawyer and file a lawsuit seeking six or seven-figure, lump-sum monetary compensation.
The scope of the government's inadequacy in warning marines and also in remediating the Camp Lejeune water contamination problem they knew about for years is staggering. On September 16, 2010, a US Congressional Subcommittee met to address the Camp Lejeune water contamination problem, stating, "For thirty years, Marines and their dependents serving at Camp LeJeune were exposed to toxic chemicals in their drinking water. It took the USMC more than four years to shut down drinking water wells they knew to be contaminated with toxic chemicals and another 24 years and an act of Congress to force them to inform veterans about this contamination of potential health problems." The only warning that Marines were given by their superiors was access to a glossy pamphlet outlining Camp Lejuene's water contamination history "which excluded critical information and misrepresents scientific conclusions about the health impact of past toxic exposures on Camp Lejeune residents, " according to the US Congress.
It does not take long for the toxins, trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE), in PFAS contaminated tap drinking water to accumulate to levels that can cause cancer. PFAS chemicals are unleashed into the environment when firefighters attempt to extinguish burn pit, petroleum, and jet fuel fires and also when training for these events. PFAS forever chemicals do not break down organically, remain intact for decades, and accumulate in the body's cells, eventually becoming cancer. Kidney cancer, multiple myelomas, non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, and several types of leukemia, all life-threatening terminal illnesses, have been reported by Camp Lejeune Marines, their spouses, and their children years after as little as one month of toxic drinking water exposure.
