Municipal Government Are On The Front Line In Fighting Local Tap Water Contamination

Recent changes in EPA water purity mandates are forcing municipalities to take action to bring down PFAS forever chemical percentages

Wednesday, July 27, 2022 - Contaminated drinking water spares no one including all of our children who are sentenced to a life of potentially having to battle developmental problems, neurological issues, and hundreds of types of deadly cancer. PFAS forever chemicals (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl) are present at levels above what is acceptable in the municipal drinking water in most towns and villages. It is hard to fully access how terrible our country's and the world's drinking water contamination problems have become. Each day brings reports of a new front opening up in what is surely to be dubbed as a war on water pollution. New, some say draconian, mandates have been established by the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that are forcing local governments to take immediate action. Without getting into the specifics of the numbers, some municipalities have shown PFAS forever chemical water contamination levels at 1000 times higher than the new EPA guidance.

PFAS forever chemicals get into the local drinking water supplies by improperly disposing of waste during the production of everyday products. Teflon non-stick cookware, Gortex water-proof clothing, and Scotchgard stain-resistant carpeting, draperies, and upholstery are just a few of the examples of products made from PFAS forever chemicals. Another source of forever chemicals comes in the form of fast food packaging and food wrappers. The most direct and rampant source of PFAS chemical drinking water pollution, however, is the runoff from the disposal of firefighting foam into drainage systems and the ground in general. 3M, the manufacturer of firefighting foam, is being sued by individuals that have been sickened by drinking PFAS forever chemical tap water. The company is accused of failing to instruct firefighters in the proper disposal of the toxic substance. Firefighters themselves that have developed cancer are filing PFAS forever chemical lawsuits. The news media are full of stories of municipalities that are taking action to rectify their local tap water contamination problems. Municipalities are being forced to purchase vast amounts of pure water from private sources to dilute PFAS forever chemicals levels down to the new leveled mandated by the EPA. Communities are being forces to retest their drinking water and to present a plan for dilution or treatment to come into EPA drinking water compliance. "More than 100 communities across Colorado are scrambling to retest drinking water under state guidance, and come up with dilution or treatment plans if PFAS levels prove too high. The EPA's drinking water guidance for PFAS, a family of common water repellents used in thousands of consumer goods from rain gear to nonstick pans, was formerly no more than 70 parts per trillion of lifetime exposure," according to a report in ColoradoSun.com
