PFAS Chemicals Found In Tap Water Of Communities Surrounding 400 Military Bases And Airports

About 700 sources of contamination have been identified and thousands of families may have been drinking water that caused them to develop cancer

Saturday, November 12, 2022 - The number of cancer victims already identified could increase tenfold due to cancer having a 10-year latency before the symptoms become readily apparent and a patient sees a doctor for a diagnosis. Several US state attorney generals have filed water contamination lawsuits against 3M, DuPont, and dozens of other manufacturers of firefighting foam, the material suspected of causing the groundwater contamination. If this is true, hundreds more community drinking water supplies may also be contaminated by firefighting foam used to train local municipal firefighters around the nation. In addition, every US airport has been ordered by the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) to use firefighting foam to extinguish jet fuel and petroleum fires that could kill hundreds of airplane passengers at one time. The FAA continues to mandate the use of firefighting foam saying that the benefits outweigh the risks. The PFAS drinking water contamination problem is so severe that the Federal Government is considering taking action. The Guardian recently wrote that more than 80% of the lakes, rivers, and streams in America have levels of PFAS forever chemicals that exceed state and federally mandated limits. "The Waterkeeper Alliance analysis found detectable PFAS levels in 95 out of 114, or 83%, of waterways, tested across 34 states and the District of Columbia, and frequently at levels that exceed federal and state limits," according to The Guardian. Lawmakers are convinced that stricter laws be enacted and lawsuits filed to hold the manufacturers of forever chemicals responsible for the damage they have done to the environment, economy, and human health.

Human cancer has been linked to PFAS chemicals, which are manmade compounds, the proliferation of which is entirely preventable. Firefighting foam is the leading culprit in producing forever chemicals but the deadly compounds can be found in many household products as well. Teflon non-stick cookware, Scotch Gard fabric stain repellant, and Gortex waterproof clothing all contain PFAS forever chemicals to thank for their performance. PFAS chemicals, which are frequently present in groundwater and drinking water, have been associated with higher risks of non-lymphoma, Hodgkin's kidney cancer, testicular cancer, prostate cancer, and ovarian cancer. According to legal scholars, people and the families of those who have contracted cancer as a result of PFAS water contamination may be entitled to real lump-sum monetary compensation for cancer they suffered from. PFAS forever chemicals are thought to be probably carcinogenic by the International Agency For Cancer Research, a division of the World Health Organization. Forever chemicals have strong molecular bonds that prevent them from biodegrading in the air, water, and soil. The human body cannot break down the compounds either causing them to bioaccumulate over time. Dairy cows, cattle, chickens, and pigs that drink PFAS forever chemical-contaminated water for their lives have extremely elevated levels of toxins that are passed on to humans that consume them.
