PFAS Chemicals Per- and Polyfluoroalkyl Substances In Childrens Clothing May Cause Cancer And Other Health Problems

Wednesday, September 28, 2022 - Mothers that have been exposed to PFAS drinking water may pass deadly chemicals directly through to their children in utero or by breastfeeding. Mothers are urged to continue to breastfeed whenever possible, however, as the great benefits to one's health of doing so may outweigh the detrimental effects of PFAS chemicals. A greater risk to the health of children may be the clothing that they wear that is made with PFAS forever chemicals. According to the Guardian, we should be worried about the type of clothes we dress our school-age children in. Toxic PFAS chemicals are frequently used to make children's clothing and textiles resist water and stains, but exposure to the compounds in clothes represents a serious health risk, a new peer-reviewed study finds." The study, published in the Environmental and Science Technology journal, detected the chemicals in 65% of school uniforms, rain gear, snowsuits, snowshoes, mittens, bibs, hats, and stroller covers tested, and at levels authors characterized as "high". Water contamination lawsuits are filed by those who have developed cancer or other illnesses from drinking tap water polluted with PFAS forever chemicals.

PFAS forever chemical their name because of the strong molecular binding they have that prevents them from breaking down into organic compounds that the body can easily eliminate. Forever chemicals stay in the body for decades and bioaccumulate to levels that become carcinogenic. PFAS forever chemicals make up many of the products we use and consume every day like fast food wrappers and packaging, Teflon non-stick cookware, Gortex water-proof clothing, Scotchgard stain-resistant carpeting, drapery, and furniture upholstery, and also flame-resistant fire fighting foam used by every municipal fire station, airport, and military base in the nation. The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) confirms that the following products contain PFAS forever chemicals. "Grease-resistant paper, fast food containers/wrappers, microwave popcorn bags, pizza boxes, and candy wrappers, stain-resistant coatings used on carpets, upholstery, and other fabrics, water-resistant clothing, cleaning products, personal care products (shampoo, dental floss), and cosmetics (nail polish, eye makeup)." PFAS chemicals have been found at dangerously high levels in the urine and body tissue of over 99% of Americans and it may be too late to solve the health issues they have caused. The CDS tells consumers that drinking the water from municipal or private wells may be the most dangerous source of PFAS forever chemicals followed by eating fish raised in waters that were polluted with PFAS. Another overlooked and potentially the source of the greatest concentrations of PFAS forever chemicals is the meat we eat that has been raised with PFAS water or PFAS feed. The same PFAS bioaccumulation is occurring in the livestock being one step higher in the food chain makes human beings even more susceptible to higher levels. Most ominous of all, however, is that the world's rainwater may now be seeded with carcinogenic levels of PFAS forever chemicals and there is no way to stop the total contamination of our ecosystem. In addition to ingesting PFAS forever chemicals by eating or drinking, those who work with PFAS chemicals may absorb them through skin contact or by inhaling the fumes of the products made with them.
