Wednesday, July 6, 2022 - The Honoring Our Pact Act contains a provision called the Camp Lejeune Justice Act (CLJA). The CLJA overturns an archaic North Carolina statute of limitation law that previously prevented most people from filing a lawsuit against the Federal government for polluting the local air and tap water with PFAS forever chemicals. Camp Lejeune is one of the more heavily polluted military sites in the country where millions of people have lived, worked, or played and consumed the local drinking water. Pregnant women that lived on or near Camp Lejeune have had an unusually high number of miscarriages, stillbirths, babies born with birth defects, and childhood deaths from cancer. A Federal government study dating back to 2014 shows that contaminated Camp Lejeune drinking water was the probable cause of many deadly diseases. According to NBCNews, "People stationed at North Carolina's Camp Lejeune while the water there was contaminated were more likely to die from several types of PFAS cancer, as well as Lou Gehrig's disease, according to an official government report." An expert from the Centers For Disease Control (CDC) told the news, "The study found elevated (risks) at Camp Lejeune for several causes of death including cancers of the kidney, liver, esophagus, cervix, multiple myeloma, Hodgkin lymphoma, and ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, also known as Lou Gehrig's disease)."
There is no telling when or if President Biden will get around to signing the Honoring our Pact Act legislation into law now that it has been approved by both the US House of Representatives and the Senate. The act expands the VA benefits that are available to service members that have suffered from cancer and neurological disorders from being near or around military burn pits used to incinerate toxic waste. Burn pit fires are often contained using carcinogenic firefighting foam and when added to the burn pit make a highly toxic cocktail. The carcinogens wash down into the underlying water table, rivers, lakes, and streams with every rainfall, and eventually contaminate the local drinking water supplies. In addition to poising local water supplies, burn pits used for waste disposal also pollute the local air, and inhaling contamination repeatedly and at low doses is believed to cause Parkinson's disease, a deadly, progressive, and irreversible mental and physical condition. Medical experts believe that inhaling toxic burn pit fumes may destroy brain cells that are responsible for producing dopamine, a chemical that coordinates information passing from brain cell to brain cell. Also, if you or a loved one have lived on a US military base for more than 30 days from 1953 to the present, you may qualify to file a water contamination cancer lawsuit against the Federal government alleging your cancer was due to drinking toxic tap water.
