County Governments Are Suing 3M For Failing To Warn Them of Forever Chemicals In Firefighting Foam

Water Contamination Lawsuit News

Hundreds of county governments could follow Bucks County Pennsylvania and hold 3M accountable for groundwater contamination

Friday, March 4, 2022 - Individuals and families have filed PFAS water lawsuits against the government and others for allowing the local drinking water supplies or private water wells to become contaminated with dangerous forever chemicals. A forever chemical is an improperly disposed industrial solvent used for a variety of purposes like the chemicals used by a dry cleaner or a manufacturer of Teflon non-stick cookware, Scotchguard for carpets, or Gortex waterproof clothing. A forever chemical is complex and does not decompose organically for hundreds of years. According to ReGenesis.com, "Forever Chemicals' is a term used for PFAS. Exposure to PFAS increases the risk of cancer harms the development of the fetus and reduces the effectiveness of vaccines" An article published recently in the magazine highlights the fact that most Americans have some level of PFAS in their bodies and that the number of contaminated individuals and the levels of PFAS has been underestimated. "Recent results from research by EWG confirms that the number of Americans exposed to PFAS from contaminated tap water has been dramatically underestimated by previous studies, both from the Environmental Protection Agency and EWG's research." Studies estimate that manufacturers, dry cleaners, military bases, airports, and other facilities have been improperly disposing of forever chemicals since the 1950s when the industrialization of the United States went full force. Fire-resistant firefighting foams have been used in firefighting training facilities in every city and municipality in the nation. Municipalities have been filing lawsuits against 3M Inc., the manufacturer of firefighting foam, for failing to disclose the health dangers of improperly disposing of it.

Bucks County, Pennsylvania is the latest to file lawsuits against firefighting foam manufacturers, after finding forever chemicals in their groundwater, for failing to warn them of the toxicity of the life-saving product. County Commissioner Bob Harvie told reporters, "The manufacturers knew these products pose dangers but did not disclose this knowledge when they sold their products," said Harvie about the lawsuit," according to NewsRadioKYW (KYW). "They continue to make and market the product without ever disclosing to anybody that the danger was present." Regulators in the county warn the public not to eat the fish taken from local streams or lakes. Public officials are also concerned about the contamination of the water supply at the nearby Trenton Airport. In addition to Bucks County, KYW reports that environmental officials have found PFAS drinking water contamination in the water supplies at three dozen Delaware Valley towns affecting tens of millions of residents. Government officials recommend that businesses and residents install PUR or Brita drinking water filters to mitigate the health risks. Unfortunately, people can ingest the chemicals in other ways like when bathing, brushing their teeth, or washing. Even bottled water that was thought to be safe has tested positive for PFAS forever chemicals prompting federal regulatory intervention. Consumer Reports warns readers that "Some noncarbonated bottled water products sold in the U.S. and tested as part of a new study contained potentially toxic PFAS chemicals... The study, published in the journal Water Research and led by Johns Hopkins University researchers, detected PFAS substances in 39 out of more than 100 bottled waters tested, in some cases at levels deemed concerning by water quality experts."
