Monday, October 3, 2022 - America faces a water contamination crisis and millions of unborn children may have taken the brunt of the abuse. According to the Environmental Working Group (EWG) carcinogenic quantities of PFAS forever chemicals are being discovered in umbilical cord blood tested immediately after childbirth. Women are generally unaware that carcinogenic chemicals in the municipal and well water they drink, cook with, and wash with, during pregnancy directly affect their unborn fetus. Cases of childhood leukemia, autism, childhood obesity, and an array of other illnesses and developmental difficulties may be attributed to mothers exposure to PFAS drinking water during pregnancy. Children are being born with carcinogenic chemicals already permeating their bodies and may be susceptible to neurological and developmental deformities and difficulties. The human digestive system is unable to eliminate PFAS forever chemicals due to their strong molecular bonds. The toxins are carcinogenic and bioaccumulate in the cells of the body and may eventually lead to cancer. PFAS drinking water cancer lawsuits alleged that corporate manufacturers of certain products have been negligent, careless, and reckless in failing to warn consumers of the dangers using or improperly disposing of their products can have on human health.
PFAS forever chemicals are found in Teflon non-stick cookware, Gortex waterproof clothing, Scotchgard stain repellant used on carpets, draperies, and upholstery, and billions of fast-food wrappers and other packaging. Hundreds of military bases, airports, and municipal firefighting stations have trained with and used firefighting foam regularly for decades. Industrial manufacturing also continues to dump PFAS chemicals into their local rivers and streams which find their way to the local water table and eventually to the consumers drinking water tap either in the home or office, most often to both. According to AboutLawsuits.com, the EWG report the PFAS contamination crisis is worldwide and affects people from every walk of life. "Researchers reviewed data from 40 studies, examining more than 30,000 samples of cord blood containing PFAS chemicals. Samples were taken from citizens of the United States, and 11 other countries. "Sixteen studies found associations between PFAS exposure in cord blood and changes in vital body molecules called cord blood lipids, as well as harm to fetal and childhood development.", according to the EWG's release. The samples collected ranged in age when tested, while some were up to five years old, proving just how long PFAS chemicals remain present in the body, without dissipating." The studies also stress that a child may continue to be exposed to PFAS chemicals through breastfeeding. One of the most readily observable indications that a baby was exposed to dangerous levels of PFAS forever chemicals in utero is being born underweight and undersized, which ironically, may lead to obesity later in childhood. According to the EWG, "PFAS have also been linked to increases in liver enzymes, behavioral and neurological outcomes, cancer, immune suppression, thyroid disorders, kidney disease, cardiovascular diseases, and harms to the developmental, and reproductive systems, such as reduced birth weight and length, and reduced abdominal circumference."
