Monday, May 16, 2022 - Marines may soon be able to seek lump-sum monetary awards from the US Government and file PFAS cancer lawsuits for failing to warn them about the health problems that they, their spouses, and their children could experience from drinking, cooking with, and bathing in ordinary tap water. Burn pits on the Camp Lejeune Marine Base and the firefighting foam that was used to continuously keep them in check and also to train with, is responsible for washing deadly PFAS forever chemicals into the local soil and water table. Marines are concerned they may have developed diseases like cancer or neurological disorders like Parkinson's disease from drinking and breathing the toxic chemicals. Moreover, there is deep concern that pregnant women living on or near the base and drinking tap water during the crucial fetal developmental months of their pregnancy, could have children born with birth defects or terminal illnesses. Hundreds of thousands of Marines and their family members suffer from health problems or have died from exposure to their base's contamination of the local environment.
One such Marine veteran told The Carolina Journal about his family's sorrows when his 9-year-old daughter Janey died from leukemia. Janey is one of four of his children who were born during his tenure at the Marine base and he fears a similar fate may await them. Both the Marine and his wife have no history of cancer in their family lineage. "I spent nearly 12 years at Camp Lejeune, where my youngest daughter Janey was conceived. For the entirety of her first trimester--a crucial period for development--Janey's mother unknowingly consumed water filled with known carcinogens such as trichloroethylene (TCE) and perchloroethylene (PCE)," The Journal reported retired Master Sergeant J.M. Ensminger, USMC, a resident of North Carolina as saying. Pregnant women in the Camp Lejeune area have reported difficulties during their pregnancy suffering miscarriages, premature deliveries, stillbirths, and other life-threatening complications. Victims also include the children of civilian personnel working on the base or in the vicinity of Camp Lejeune. Many have been born with permanent birth defects and autism. "Families gave birth to healthy children, who, once exposed to the contaminated water, developed cancers and chronic illnesses. Many tragically passed -- so many, that one local cemetery is called "Baby Heaven," Kansas.com reported.
The CLJA will help Marines and their surviving family members attain justice for their losses by enabling them monetary reimbursement and punitive damages for the distress they have caused. No matter what, however, The Act will fall far short of replacing what the military has taken from them. Marine Sargeant Ensminger told the Journal, "To lose a child to a catastrophic long-term illness is hell on earth. As a parent, you feel entirely helpless. I prayed constantly that the suffering be taken from my Janey and put on me. But that never happened. Instead, I watched my daughter suffer for years until she ultimately succumbed to cancer. To this day, it is the most painful experience I have ever endured." No parent should suffer the anguish of watching a child suffer from a prolonged illness and then die.
